2. Cascais & Estoril (30 min): the seaside
A breezy former fishing town turned elegant resort, with a pretty marina, sandy coves and a relaxed pace. Easy by train along the coast, perfect for a half-day or combined with Sintra. Nearby Guincho beach is a magnet for surfers.
3. Cabo da Roca (45 min): the end of the land
The westernmost point of continental Europe, where wind-battered cliffs drop into the Atlantic. Dramatic and free, best combined with Sintra and Cascais on a loop.
4. Óbidos (1 h): a medieval gem
A perfectly preserved walled town of whitewashed houses, flowered lanes and a hilltop castle. Walk the ramparts, taste the cherry liqueur ginjinha in a chocolate cup, and wander without a map.
5. Fátima (1 h 30): a place of pilgrimage
One of the world’s major Catholic sanctuaries, drawing pilgrims from across the globe. A moving stop for the faithful and the curious alike, often combined with the monasteries of Batalha and Alcobaça.
6. Arrábida & Setúbal (45 min): turquoise water
South of the Tagus, the Arrábida Natural Park hides some of Portugal’s most beautiful beaches, with clear turquoise water beneath green hills. Add fresh fish in Setúbal and a dolphin-watching trip in the Sado estuary.
7. Évora (1 h 30): the Alentejo
A UNESCO-listed city of Roman temple, bone chapel and golden squares, gateway to the slow, sun-baked Alentejo and its wines. A rewarding full-day trip for history and gastronomy lovers.
