Romantic weekend in Lisbon: 48 hours to fall in love

Couple watching the sunset over Lisbon's rooftops from a miradouro

Lisbon has something few cities possess: a light. That golden late-afternoon glow that caresses the azulejos, that deep Tagus blue turning pink at dusk. For a romantic weekend, few destinations rival the Portuguese capital. After organising dozens of romantic escapes, we share our perfect 48-hour itinerary.

Friday evening: a soft arrival

Drop your bags in a boutique hotel in Príncipe Real or Chiado. Our favourite addresses combine private terraces, homemade breakfasts and discretion. After a shower, head to Park Bar, tucked on the top floor of a car park in Bica: one of Lisbon’s most spectacular rooftops, perfect for a sunset drink.

For dinner, walk up to Bairro Alto. Away from tourist traps, a handful of hidden tables serve memorable contemporary Portuguese cuisine. Try the slow-cooked octopus or a revisited bacalhau, paired with a glass of Vinho Verde. The evening naturally drifts into the lively streets of the district, or into a small fado house if you prefer emotion to partying.

Saturday: Alfama, fado and the tram

Start the day with breakfast in a neighbourhood pastelaria: a warm pastel de nata, a creamy galão, a few Portuguese words tried at the counter. Then catch tram 28 at its terminus, before the crowds, and hop off at Miradouro das Portas do Sol. From there, plunge on foot into Alfama, its labyrinth of alleys, its flower-filled windows, the occasional fado drifting from an open window.

For lunch, book a grilled-fish restaurant facing the Tagus. The afternoon is for discovering Castelo de São Jorge, followed by a nap beneath the olive trees. Around 5pm, head to Miradouro da Senhora do Monte in Graça, the highest in town. The view is hypnotic.

In the evening, treat yourselves to a private dinner in a historic home or on a rooftop with a breathtaking view. For an unforgettable experience, we also organise bespoke events: candlelit dinner on a secret terrace, private fado evening, sunset sailing.

Sunday: Sintra or the Atlantic

Sunday morning offers two options. First: Sintra, 40 minutes by car. The colourful palaces of Palácio da Pena, the enchanted gardens of Quinta da Regaleira and the misty lanes of the upper town compose an almost surreal setting. Lunch in a traditional restaurant perched on a hillside, then return in late afternoon.

Second option: the Atlantic coast. Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe, features dramatic cliffs battered by the wind. Continue to Guincho beach or Cascais for a final seafood lunch facing the ocean. Back to Lisbon in late afternoon, just in time for the airport.

Our tips for a successful weekend

A romantic weekend in Lisbon means at least two nights to avoid the rush. Skip July and August (heat, crowds): May, June, September and October are ideal. Choose a central stay: Chiado, Príncipe Real or Baixa let you do everything on foot. And leave room for the unexpected — that’s often what makes the best memories.
