Travelling to Lisbon with children is genuinely easy. The Portuguese capital ticks every box for a great family destination: short distances, welcoming locals, safety, mild weather, beaches within tram distance, and a cuisine even the fussiest eaters enjoy. Here is our selection of 10 Lisbon with kids activities that appeal to all ages, tested over the years by our team and their own children.
1. Ride tram 28
This is THE Lisboeta ritual. The little yellow tram, creaky and often packed, climbs the hills from Graça to Estrela via Alfama and Baixa. A real ride for the little ones. Our tip: catch it at the Martim Moniz terminus early in the morning to be sure of a seat.
2. The Oceanário de Lisboa
Located in Parque das Nações, the Oceanário is one of the largest in Europe. Its huge central tank with rays, sharks and silver sardine shoals mesmerises children for hours. Plan at least 2h30.
3. Castelo de São Jorge
The ramparts, towers to climb, peacocks roaming free: the Castelo delights aspiring knights. The panoramic view over Lisbon and the Tagus is a reward for everyone.
4. An afternoon in Belém
Visit the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, then make the essential stop at Pastéis de Belém: the original pastry shop, opened in 1837, serves custard tarts known around the world. Follow up with the Coach Museum and an ice cream by the Tagus.
5. Catch the ferry to Cacilhas
A 15-minute crossing from Cais do Sodré and you land on the other side of the Tagus, facing Lisbon. For kids, it’s an adventure; for parents, it’s the best free view of the city. Grilled-fish lunch included.
6. Carcavelos or Costa da Caparica beach
A 25-minute train ride away, Lisbon opens onto the Atlantic. Golden sand, swimming, sandcastles: half a day that everyone enjoys. For older kids, some surf schools offer lessons from age 6.
7. Jardim da Estrela
This century-old park in the heart of the city offers a playground, a bandstand, a rose garden and even a small petting farm for toddlers. Perfect for a break after a busy morning.
8. The Santa Justa Lift
This elegant 1902 wrought-iron lift links Baixa to Bairro Alto. The ride is short, but the “time machine” effect is charming and the upper platform offers a lovely view.
9. Sintra: a day in a fairytale
Palácio da Pena with its multicoloured façades looks like a giant toy. Quinta da Regaleira, with its grottoes and initiation wells, turns into a treasure hunt. We recommend a full family day with an English-speaking guide to keep the youngest ones engaged.
10. A pastel de nata workshop
Butter, puff pastry, vanilla custard: everyone leaves with an apron, a box and a smile. We organise these workshops in English in partner pastry shops, on booking.
Our tips for a successful family trip
Lisbon is hilly: strollers are not recommended in Alfama and Graça, go for a baby carrier for children under 3. Bring non-slip shoes (the calçadas get slippery when wet). And book your major activities (Oceanário, Sintra) ahead of time in peak season.
