Walk through the centre of Lisbon and you will find no shortage of shops selling Portuguese products. The Garrafeira Nacional, with its head store on Rua de Santa Justa in the Baixa, is one of Portugal’s most respected wine merchants: vast selection, almost a century of history. For tinned fish, the market stalls at the Mercado da Ribeira carry a decent range. Both are legitimate options if you are passing through the city centre. But if what you are looking for is personal curation, artisan producers, and someone who can tell you the story behind every product, without the tourist-shop markup, you need to go further.

How to tell authentic from generic
The tell-tale signs of genuine Portuguese products are provenance, producer and process. Real Tricana conservas are packed by hand in a small Matosinhos cannery, not mass-produced in an anonymous factory. Good natural wine carries the name of the winemaker, the region and the grape variety. Muxama worth eating is made by a small producer in the Algarve using a centuries-old curing method, not imported and relabelled. The most beautifully designed tin is not necessarily the best-tasting one, which is exactly how most tourist shops operate.
Why the Garrafeira Nacional is not the answer for everything
The Garrafeira Nacional is excellent for what it does: a broad selection, strong on conventional Portuguese wines, Port and spirits. But its focus is not natural wine, its gourmet food range is limited, and its high-street locations serve a very different clientele from the artisan-focused, personal-curation experience that POP offers. It is a great wine shop for classics. It is not a discovery.

In the Graça neighbourhood, well away from the souvenir corridors of the Baixa, POP is a wine and gourmet store run by two Frenchmen who built it around one principle: only stock what is genuinely worth having. Every bottle of wine is chosen personally. Every product on the shelves has been sourced directly and tasted before it was stocked. No house brands, no bulk-buy deals, no tourist markup.
The muxama comes in elegant vacuum-sealed tubes from a quality Algarve producer. The Tricana conservas cover the full range: sardines in olive oil, lemon, smoked, mackerel fillets, tuna. The natural wine selection runs to fifty-plus references. The Chocolat Bonnat bars are single-origin grand cru chocolate, rare outside France. The Gorreana teas come from the oldest tea plantation in Europe, in the Azores. None of it with a tourist-price markup. All of it with the knowledge of someone who has spent years building relationships with the people who make it.
